i divided by zero

I couldn’t resist this image. Along with many other people, I think zero is an interesting number (see the nothing that is). And, despite the impression of many people with whom I’ve talked, zero is a number. The image gives some idea of students’ conceptions of zero and of what it might mean to divide by zero. It’s also pretty well done as an image.

  2. That’s one of the best images that I’ve seen in a long time.

    I made it the background on my laptop and it’s a hit with the entire Math Dept. I’d love to blow it up and make a poster out of it to hang in the classroom because my students don’t see much difference between dividing by zero and dividing into zero.

    This is not a digitally inhanced photo. This was an actual piece of public art from houston known as the inversion house.
